Reversi (Othello)
Reversi
Reversal Strategy
How to play
Bracket opponent discs between yours to flip them. Most discs when the board fills wins.
Optimize final options, not current count
The midgame disc count does not predict the winner in Reversi. Restricting mobility and securing stable corners and edges matters more.
Squares beside a corner can hand that corner to the opponent. Evaluate how a move changes the opponent's legal replies before choosing the largest immediate flip.
Origin & history
Reversi was invented in 1883 England and reborn in 1973 Japan as 'Othello' with standardized rules and world championships.
FAQ
Why are corners so important?
Corner discs can never be flipped, anchoring everything around them. Securing corners matters far more than flipping many discs early.
