How to play

Win by checkmating the opponent's king with your 16 pieces. White moves first.

Balance material and position

Piece values are only a starting point for evaluating trades. Poor central control, king safety, or development can erase a material advantage.

A sound move survives the opponent's strongest reply. For every candidate, check opposing checks, captures, and threats before continuing your plan.

Origin & history

Chess descends from 6th-century Indian chaturanga, refined through Persia into the modern European rules — the most deeply studied board game in the world.

FAQ

How do the AI levels differ?

Apprentice searches 1 ply with occasional mistakes, Adept 2 plies, and Master 3 plies with negamax. Search runs on this page, so Master may take a little longer in complex positions.

Are castling and en passant supported?

Yes. Castling is forbidden while in check or through an attacked square; en passant is available only on the immediate reply to a two-square pawn move. Pawns may promote to queen, rook, bishop or knight, and the game detects threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule and insufficient material.
