Klondike Solitaire Strategy — How to Win More Often
In Klondike, move order can open or close paths even within the same deal. These strategies turn haphazard card-moving into a systematic approach.
1. Exhaust tableau moves before flipping the stock
Flipping the stock locks those cards into a fixed order you can't rearrange later. Only draw from the stock once every safe tableau move is used up.
2. Don't rush cards to the foundations
Aces and 2s do not support lower tableau cards, so they are normally safe to send up. Before moving a 3 or higher, check whether it is still needed to support a lower card of the opposite color. OIYO also lets you bring a foundation card back down when needed.
3. Prioritize columns with face-down cards
A move that reveals new information (a face-down card) is always worth more than shuffling cards that are already face-up. When in doubt, clear the column that still has hidden cards first.
4. Save empty columns for kings
Only a king (or a king-led run) can move into an empty column. Filling it hastily with anything else means you'll have nowhere to put a king when one turns up.
5. Look two moves ahead, not just the color alternation
A legal move isn't automatically a good one. Before committing, picture what card the move reveals next and whether that card actually opens up further plays.
6. Cycle the stock again if you're stuck
Don't give up after one pass through the stock. As the tableau changes, the same stock cards may suddenly have somewhere to go.
Common mistakes
- Sending a 3 or higher up without checking whether the tableau still needs it
- Trying to fill an empty column with a non-king
- Leaving columns with face-down cards for later
- Giving up after one stock cycle instead of running through it again as the board changes
