Hearts Strategy — How to Win and Avoid Points

Hearts isn't won by simply always playing your lowest card. The real skill is reading your hand's shape and timing when to dump dangerous cards.

1. Get rid of the Queen of Spades early

If you're holding the Queen of Spades (13 points), look to pass it away or dump it safely once spades have been led a few times — ideally after the ace and king are gone. Holding it too long means the risk follows you to the end.

2. Void a short suit on purpose

If you have only 2-3 cards in a suit, play them off whenever that suit is led so you go void early. Once void, you're free to discard any card you want — including hearts or the Queen of Spades — whenever that suit comes up again.

3. Track who's void in what

The moment someone doesn't follow suit, you know they're void in it. Leading that suit again lets them dump a dangerous card freely — so track voids and use them to steer who wins each trick.

4. Count exactly in the endgame

By the last few tricks, so few cards remain that you can often calculate exactly what everyone is holding. From this point, play by calculation, not by feel.

5. Only attempt to shoot the moon when you're sure

Capturing every heart and the Queen of Spades (26 points) gives you 0 and everyone else 26. It's devastating when it works, but a failed attempt usually means you eat most of the penalty yourself. Only go for it when your opening hand is genuinely loaded with high cards.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the Queen of Spades too long and getting caught with it at the end
  • Missing chances to void a short suit and following suit out of habit instead
  • Leading suits without tracking who's already void in them
  • Attempting a moonshot with a weak hand and eating the penalty instead
